ECU Opens Season Sunday At Golfweek Challenge
September 10, 2021 | Women's Golf
GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina University women's golf team will open the 2021-22 season on Sunday, Sept. 12, at the Golfweek Fall Challenge on Pawley's Island, S.C. The three-day, 54-hole season-opening event will be contested at Caledonia Golf Club.
"I'm really excited to see where we are right now," Pirate head coach CC Buford said. "It's impossible to replace players like Dorthea [Forbrigd] and Michelle [Forsland], who graduated last year. We've got some returners that are very hungry and have individual goals as well as goals for our team. We've also got some newcomers that are eager to get into the lineup.
"It's matter of finding that cohesion and making sure the energy bouncing off of one another works. There will probably be a couple of different lineups as we start out this season, but that's all to work to our goal at the end of the year which is to win the conference championship."
Â
ECU welcomes back four returning letterwinners to its 2021-22 rosters in seniors Kathryn Carson and Julie Boysen Hillestad, as well as juniors Caroline Hermes and Oda Sofie Kilsti. Riley Hamilton returns to the roster as a redshirt freshman. They are joined by newcomers Macie Burcham (Greensboro, N.C.), Andrea Morales Llopis (Valenica, Spain) and Grayson Warren (Belhaven, N.C.).
Hillestad, an all-conference performer as a junior, had the best scoring average of the group a season ago with a 74.22 clip, while was next with a 75.93 average.
Â
Carson, Hamilton, Hillestad, Kilsti and Llopis will compete for the Pirates at the Golfweek Challenge this week.
A total of 20 teams are scheduled to take part in the season-opening event including 2021 Big South champion Campbell and 2021 Ohio Valley conference winner Jacksonville State. The Pirates (67), Camels (71) and Central Arkansas (89) were the only teams in the field to finish in the top 100 of the final Golfstat rankings last season.
Action will get underway each day at 8 a.m. Â and live scoring will be available throughout the event by visiting GolfStat.com.
