Weekly Release No. 7 (PDF)
GREENVILLE, N.C. – Having notched its first American Athletic Conference victory of the season last Sunday, East Carolina looks to build on that momentum in a road affair at Temple Wednesday and a home match against Cincinnati this Sunday.
Â
First serve versus the Owls in Philadelphia is slated for 7 p.m., while the contest against the Bearcats back in Greenville is set for a Noon start. Both matches will stream live via ESPN+.
Â
The Pirates (6-10, 1-3 AAC) split a pair last weekend at home, falling to co-league leader Houston in three sets before bouncing back with a comeback 3-1 win over Tulane. ECU is currently tied with Temple and Cincinnati for seventh place in the conference standings.
Â
East Carolina ranks second in the league in blocks per set (2.41) and third in service aces per set (1.60). Individually, Kianie Cummings and Shaylynn Hall lead the American in blocks per set with respective 1.25 and 1.18 averages while Angeles Alderete is fourth in kills per set (3.90) and points per set (4.36) and Payton Evenstad sits second in aces per set (0.43). Along the back row, Kenzie Beckham checks in at fifth in digs per set (3.63).
Â
For their efforts against Houston and Tulane, Alderete and Hall were tabbed to the AAC Weekly Honor Roll.
Â
About Temple
Under the direction of first-year head coach Linda Hampton-Keith, Temple enters the week with a 7-8 overall record and 1-3 American Conference ledger. The Owls split with Tulane and Houston last weekend in Philadelphia, overcoming the Green Wave in five sets before dropping a 3-1 decision to the Cougars. Temple ranks 11th in the league in hitting percentage (.160) and is sixth in blocks per set (2.02). Taylor Davenport has been a key offensive producer for the Owls this season as she is third in the AAC in kills per set (3.93) and fifth in points per set (4.34). Temple is 2-2 at home with wins over Delaware and Tulane as well as losses to Seton Hall and Houston.
Â
The Temple Series
Temple leads the series with East Carolina by 10-5 margin. The teams each won a match against the other a season ago as the Pirates knocked off the Owls in three sets in Greenville before Temple answered with a 3-2 victory on its home floor in the campaign finale. ECU has won five of the last eight encounters with the Owls but are 2-5 against Temple on the road.
Â
A Look At Cincinnati
Cincinnati is 3-11 overall and 1-3 in league play, but has faced a difficult schedule that has pitted the Bearcats against Dayton, Florida State, Pittsburgh, BYU and South Carolina among others. Last weekend, Cincinnati lost home contests to SMU (3-1) and Memphis (3-1). The Bearcats are currently ninth in the conference in hitting percentage (.195) and 10th in opposing hitting percentage (.254). In terms of individuals, Caroline Endres is third in assists per set (10.08).Â
Â
The Cincinnati Series
The Pirates have not experienced much success against the Bearcats, trailing the all-time series by a 19-3 margin and losing the last eight meetings. East Carolina last defeated Cincinnati during the 2017 campaign when it won consecutive encounters to end the season with a program-high 13 conference victories. The Pirates are 2-7 against the Bearcats in Greenville.
Â
Up Next
East Carolina heads back on the road for a pair of AAC matches at South Florida (Oct. 14) and UCF (Oct. 16).
