East Carolina (1-0) raced out to a 9-1 lead after the opening quarter and never looked back, beating Radford 13-4 in the season opener. Megan Tryniski led the Pirates with five points on two goals and three assists while France Kimel had four points on one goal and three assists. Sophia LoCicero, Nicole LeGar and Ellie Bromley all had hat tricks in the win. In the cage, Brynn Knight got her first career start, making two saves and allowing two goals in the first half. Sophie Bandorick relieved her at halftime, making seven saves and allowing two goals in 29 minutes of action before Savvy Smith closed out the game with one save in the final minute.
Defensively, the Pirates had an 11-9 edge in draw controls, with Flynn Reed grabbing a career-high five draw controls while LeGar had three. East Carolina also forced 11 turnovers, with Caroline Meininger, Camryn Pennypacker and Alexandra Giacolone each causing a pair of Radford turnovers. Sophie Patton led ECU with four ground balls while Pennypacker and Kimel had three each.
Winthrop (0-0) will be the second straight East Carolina opponent that will have its head coach making their debut. The Eagles are coming off a 7-8 record in 2021, including going 3-3 in the Big South and losing to High Point in the Big South Semifinals. Kara Concheck will take the reins as head coach this season and will have the reigning Big South Co-Defensive Player of the Year Kimora Bailey to rely on. Bailey was recently named the Big South Preseason Defensive Player of the Year after racking up 68 draw controls, 20 ground balls and 13 caused turnovers in 2021. Bailey was joined on the Big South Preseason All-Conference team by Alyssa Angelo, who finished 2021 with 32 points on 25 goals and seven assists while also adding 36 draw controls, 17 ground balls and 17 caused turnovers. The Eagles will need to replace the production of Bianca Tedesco, who racked up 62 points on 20 goals and 42 assists last year.
It will be the third meeting between East Carolina and Winthrop and the first since 2019. The home team has won in each of the previous two battles, with Winthrop grabbing a 17-9 win in 2018 followed by East Carolina taking a 13-12 victory in 2019. LeGar had a pair of goals in the 2019 win while Pennypacker also added a goal and an assist.
Presbyterian (1-0) opened its season with a dominant 16-6 victory over visiting Howard. Like ECU, the Blue Hose did most of its damage in the first half, outscoring Howard 12-3 in the opening 30 minutes. Presbyterian got five goals from Big South Preseason All-Conference selection Abby Edmisten. Edmisten led the Blue Hose with 49 points and 41 goals in 2021, including scoring nine goals and adding an assist in a victory at Lander. Presbyterian also has experience in the cage, with senior Heidi Shafer having started all 14 games during 2021 and has played in 35 games in her career. Shafer started against Howard, making four saves. Presbyterian will also have a familiar face on its sidelines. Brittany Borchers is in her first season as an assistant coach for the Blue Hose after playing four seasons for the Pirates. Borchers finished her ECU career in 2021, having tallied 24 goals and 23 assists in 48 career games.
It will be the second all-time meeting between East Carolina and Presbyterian. The Pirates won the first matchup, a 19-9 triumph in Clinton, S.C., in 2020. LeGar racked up six points on four goals and two assists in the win while Tryniski, Pennypacker and Elizabeth Wilson all had three points.
Friday's game against Winthrop will get started at 5 p.m., and will be broadcast on ESPN+ with Dennis Cox and Natalie Kalibat on the call. First draw for Sunday's game is slated for 2 p.m., and will be streamed on ECUPirates.com. Fans can follow the Winthrop live stats here and the Presbyterian live stats here. Admission for both games is free for all fans.
