Burgess Signs Madi For 2022-23 Season
February 09, 2022 | Women's Tennis
GREENVILLE, N.C. – While the current season has just gotten underway, the East Carolina women's tennis team also has one eye on the future as the Pirates have signed Joan Madi to a national letter of intent for the 2022-23 season.
Â
"I think Joan is the perfect fit for our final spot," said head coach Kirstin Burgess. "Not only is she a lefty, but she brings a mental toughness that is sometimes missing on our very young team."
Â
Madi arrives from Baabdath, Lebanon where she has competed on both the national and international levels. She is a four time National Champion in the U18 Lebanon Cup Championship and a three-time National Champion in the U16 Cedars Cup Tournament. Madi was a semifinalist in the ITF J5 Limassol tournament and reached the quarterfinals of the ITF J5 in Beirut. She also helped her team win the U14 Fed Cup and was a West Asia Finalist in 2014.
Â
East Carolina is 1-2 on the young season, with the win coming at home over Appalachian State while the Pirates' two losses have come on the road at top-six ranked opponents. ECU will have its second home match of the season on Sunday, Feb. 13 when the Pirates host UNCG at River Birch Tennis Complex. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m., and admission is free for all fans.
