"We have a great opportunity next week not only to get back into the winning column, but also to show our freshman our nation's capital," said head coach Kirstin Burgess. "There are no easy matches on the road. I don't expect these to be any different. All three teams are well coached and stacked with talent so we will really need to work hard to get the best results out of next week."
East Carolina (2-5) is still looking for its first road win of the season, although three of those losses have come to No. 3 North Carolina, No. 7 NC State and No. 52 VCU. Ines Bachirs (6-7), Alisha Hussain (6-7) and Martina Muzzolon (6-8) all lead the Pirates with six singles wins. Muzzolon and Hussain have held the top two singles spots for ECU, respectively, in each of the seven matches. The Pirates have struggled in doubles, going just 13-22 overall and 5-12 in dual matches. Anne Lou Champion and Isabella Rivera Ortiz have been the best duo since the calendar turned to 2022, going 3-2 together on court two. The pairings of Sofia Cerezo Holgado and Alisa Diercksen as well as Bachir and Hussain have each won one dual match as tandems.
Georgetown (0-9, 0-2 Big East) is looking for its first win of the season still. The Hoyas will travel to Baltimore to take on Morgan State on Saturday before hosting the Pirates on Monday. The match against the Pirates will be the first home match for the Hoyas, who are currently 0-7 on the road and 0-2 at neutral sites. Olivia Ashton (9-6) and Elena De Santis (9-9) lead Georgetown in singles wins, with the pair both splitting their time between courts three and four. Sofie Moenster has held down court one, going 2-5 there and 5-8 overall. In doubles, Ashton and Anna Short lead the Hoyas with a 5-5 ledger, going 1-2 on the top court. It will be the third meeting between the two programs since 2006. The Pirates won 4-0 in a neutral site matchup in Richmond, Va., on Jan. 27, 2006 while the Hoyas earned a 4-3 home win on April 6, 2013. Current Pirate head coach Kirstin Burgess played on court three in that 2006 matchup against Georgetown, but her match did not finish before the Pirates clinched the team win.
George Washington (2-5) will also play a match on Saturday before hosting the Pirates on Tuesday, taking on Howard at home. The Colonials have lost four of their past five matches, losing at Maryland (7-0), Navy (6-1), West Virginia (5-2) and Toledo (7-0) while beating Delaware State (7-0) at home. Alexis Nelson leads the team with a 9-2 singles mark, while Stella Wiesemann is 9-4. In doubles, Nelson and Lindsay Thompson are a perfect 8-0 together. The two programs have met three times since 2013, with East Carolina winning all three matchups. The Pirates won in Washington, D.C., in 2013 (5-2) and in 2019 (4-0) while beating the Colonials 4-1 in Greenville in 2020. Diercksen got both a singles and doubles victory in that win in 2019, a win that was a part of ECU's school-record 22-match winning streak.
Maryland (8-1) will take on Richmond before hosting the Pirates on Wednesday. The Terrapins have won six straight since dropping a 4-3 loss at Richmond, winning those six matches by a combined score of 31-3. Maryland has been dominant at home, winning all seven matches in College Park. It will be the first ever meeting between the Pirates and the Terrapins.
The Pirates will take on Georgetown on Monday at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Md with the match starting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday's match will get started at George Washington's Southeast Tennis and Learning Center at 12 noon. The road trip will close on Wednesday with a 12:30 p.m., first serve at Maryland.
