
ECU Faces Liberty And Longwood In Lynchburg Double Dip

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Fresh off its first victory of the 2023 dual season, the East Carolina women's tennis team heads back on the road for a pair of matches against Liberty and Longwood Saturday, Jan. 28, at the Liberty Indoor Tennis Center. The Pirates face the host Flames at 9 a.m. before taking on the Lancers shortly after at 1 p.m.

ECU played in front of its home crowd for the first time this season in its most recent outing, defeating N.C. Central 5-2 at the River Birch Tennis Center back on Jan. 21.

Ines Bachir and Alisha Hussain got East Carolina off to a solid start in doubles with a 6-4 win over Candice Bernier and Alejandra Hidalgo Vega before Kim Auerswald and Laura Becker secured the doubles point with a 7-6 (7) victory over Isabelle Exsted and Lafi Joao.

In singles action, Martina Muzzolon, Alisha Hussain and Joan Madi picked up straight-set wins while Bachir fought to a 5-7, 6-4 (10-8) triumph over Bernier to help clinch the match for the Pirates. Hussain, who put together an 8-2 record in the fall, improved to 1-1 in dual matches by cruising to a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Maria Picazo Martin.

Liberty (1-1) played a duo of close decisions to open its season two weeks ago, defeating Middle Tennessee State 4-3 and falling to FIU by the same margin in a neutral site event. Maria Juliana Parra Romero was named the first ASUN Player of the Week on Jan. 18 after putting together a 2-0 record at the No. 1 position. The Flames were selected third in the Atlantic Sun Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll after a 19-8 campaign in 2022 that culminated in an appearance in the league tournament title match.

Longwood (0-1) kicked off its campaign with a 6-1 road loss to UNC Greensboro Jan. 20. The Lancers emerged with the doubles point but dropped all six singles matches in close fashion, losing at the No. 3, 4 and 6 positions in three sets.
