East Carolina Begins Fall Season In Williamsburg
September 14, 2023 | Women's Tennis
GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina Women's Tennis program kicks off its fall slate this weekend, making the trip to Williamsburg, Va., for the Tribe Invitational hosted by William & Mary at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.
Â
The two-day event is scheduled to run over two days from Saturday to Sunday (Sept. 16-17).
Â
ECU will play in five fall events at William & Mary, Elon, Liberty, UNC Greensboro and the ITA Carolina Regional hosted by North Carolina.
Â
The Pirates produced a 9-10 record in the 2023 dual season, upping their win total by five from 2022. Head Coach Kirstin Burgess welcomes back seven players from last year's squad and has added three newcomers – including transfer student-athlete Kexuan Zhou from the University of North Texas.
Â
Martina Muzzolon put together a team-best 12-4 singles record in the spring, including a 10-2 mark at the No. 3 spot in the lineup. Ines Bachir also notched double-digit singles wins with 11 in her 17 matches. Bachir teamed up with Alisha Hussain in doubles play as the duo powered its way to a 15-4 record and a ranked victory over then No. 56 Sofiya Kuzina and Ine Stange of William & Mary.
Â
In its second season since the program restart, ECU picked up victories over N.C. Central, Longwood, Radford, Hampton, Chowan, Western Carolina, UNCW, Campbell and VCU while finishing the year with a 4-1 record at its home venue River Birch. The Pirates were blanked just three times – twice against a pair of nationally-ranked opponents in No. 2 North Carolina and No. 7 NC State as well as Virginia Tech. East Carolina then fell to Houston in a tight 4-2 decision in the first round of the American Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Championship.
Â
The Pirates' full 2024 spring dual schedule will be released at a later date.
