Samantha Moxie Earns Honorable Mention Recognition
IRVING, Texas - After a stellar outing in East Carolina soccer's 2-0 win at Florida Atlantic on Sunday, junior Juliana Viera has been named the American Athletic Conference's Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. Additionally, senior Samantha Moxie was named to the weekly Honorable Mention list.
Viera helped the Pirates defense to a dominant effort, allowing only four shots and just one shot on goal and the team's eighth clean sheet of the season. The junior Uruguayan got involved in the offense as well, serving up a sweet delivery on a free kick to assist Caitlen-Star Dolan Boodram's goal. The helper was Viera's fourth assist of the season which is tied for the team lead. Viera's recognition is her first of the season and the team's seventh.
For her part, Moxie scored the winner on Sunday, striking in just the 15th minute of the game for her second goal of the season, one which proved decisive.Â
Viera, Moxie and the Pirates will take to their home pitch at Johnson Stadium one more time for the season on Thursday at 7 p.m. as they host Rice for a Black Out game on Halloween night. The team has already secured their spot in the American Athletic Conference Tournament taking place Nov. 4-10 in Lakewood Ranch, Fla.
