Sierra Lowery Earns Honorable Mention Recognition
IRVING, Texas - East Carolina soccer's Abby Sowa has been named the American Athletic Conference's Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Friday. Additionally, Sierra Lowery has earned a weekly Honorable Mention nod.
Sowa's honor comes after scoring a penalty kick in the first half of a 2-1 win over Rice on Thursday night which helped the Pirates secure the third seed in the American Athletic Conference Tournament. It was the senior's fourth goal of the season and seventh of her career, it is also her fifth career penalty conversion. Her weekly recognition is also her second of the season and the fifth of her career.
Lowery earned her Honorable Mention recognition for scoring a scorcher in the second half against Rice, a goal which proved to be the winner. A do-it-all midfielder for the Pirates, the goal was remarkably just the second of Lowery's career and her first since 2021.
Sowa, Lowery and the Pirates will return to action at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 4 for their opening game of the American Athletic Conference Tournament against sixth-seeded Charlotte in Lakewood Ranch, Fla. The game will be available for streaming on ESPN+ as the team seeks revenge for a season-ending loss to the 49ers last season.
