Pirates Defeat Fairfield In Eight Innings, 2-1

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Joie Fittante hit an RBI single walk-off in the eighth inning to lift East Carolina past Fairfield 2-1 on the first day of the Pirate Clash at Max R. Joyner Stadium on Friday evening.

Anna Sawyer and Logan Sutton each tallied two hits for the Pirates (8-0) who used some more late-inning magic to remain unbeaten and tie for their best eight-game start since the 2006 season.

Both teams went through the first seven innings in a pitchers' duel as both teams combined to leave eight runners on base. Fairfield earned the first run of the game in the eighth inning on a groundout RBI to take a 1-0 lead going into the bottom of the eighth.

Annie Kate Dalton would single to advance Emma Jackson to third and then Morgan Johnson would hit a sacrifice fly to bring Jackson home to tie the game at 1-1. Sawyer and Sutton would each hit a single to advance Dalton to third before Fittante stepped up to the plate to drive home to game-winning run.

Taylor Apple (3-0) recorded 10 strikeouts in eight innings in the circle.
