March 10, 2024 | Softball
Denton, Texas – Emma Jackson went 3-of-4 at the plate including two RBI and two doubles to go along with a home run but East Carolina dropped the series finale to North Texas 7-4 on Sunday afternoon at Lovelace Stadium.
The Pirates (21-5, 0-3 AAC) had their best offensive showing of the series with eight hits and seven runs but surrendered six hits including two home runs at inopportune moments.
After leaving a runner on in each of the first two innings, the Pirates would score their first run of the weekend after Jackson scored on a wild pitch to give ECU a 1-0 lead.
The Mean Green would regain momentum in the bottom of the fourth as Molly Rainey hit a three-run shot to right field to put North Texas ahead 3-1 going into the fifth inning.
ECU would quickly answer as Taylor Woodring hit a single and Jackson would follow up with a home run to right field of her own to tie the game at 3-3. Morgan Johnson would hit a double and Annie Kate Dalton would tally an RBI single to score Johnson, giving the Pirates a 4-3 lead.
North Texas would waste little time regaining the lead as the Mean Green would load the bases and Mikayla Smith would hit a grand slam to break the game open and give the Mean Green a 7-4 lead in the bottom of the fifth.
ECU would have a chance to cut into the three-run deficit with two runners on base, but the Pirates would line into a double play to end in the top of the sixth and never threatened the rest of the way.
Jordan Hatch (9-4) gave up the go-ahead three runs in the fifth inning for the loss.
