Pirates Drop Series Opener To Wichita State, 4-1

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Anna Sawyer went 1-for-3 with an RBI but East Carolina dropped its series opener against Wichita State 4-1 inside Max R. Joyner Family Stadium on Friday evening.
Sawyer was one of six Pirates (21-6, 0-4 AAC) to tally a hit but despite outhitting the Shockers 6-3, Wichita State drew three walks followed by a grand slam from Taylor Sedlacek in the first inning that proved to be too much for the Pirates to overcome.
ECU had its best chance to get back in the game in the bottom of the sixth inning after a Morgan Johnson single followed by Sawyer's RBI double to make the score 4-1. The Pirates' next three batters all hit into outs as ECU stranded two runners to end the inning and stop the comeback.
Taylor Apple (6-1) was hit with her first loss in the circle, giving up three hits and four earned runs.

The Pirates will look to even the series with the Shockers tomorrow at 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
