Pirates' Comeback Attempt Falls Short Against Wichita State, 6-5
March 16, 2024 | Softball
GREENVILLE, N.C. – Morgan Johnson was one of four Pirates with two or more hits, going 3-for-3 at the plate, but East Carolina's late-inning rally attempt fell short as Wichita State defeated the Pirates 6-5 at Max R. Joyner Family Stadium on Saturday afternoon to win the season series.
Anna Sawyer, Makenzie Mason and Taylor Woodring each tallied a hit for the Pirates (21-7, 0-5 AAC) who once again bested the Shockers in hits with an 11-9 advantage but left 10 runners on base in the loss.
Wichita State got things started quickly just like in the first game with a three-run RBI home run from Taylor Sedlacek to give the Shocker any early 3-0 lead going into the bottom of the first. ECU would get runners in scoring position in the bottom of the first inning with Sawyer scoring on a passed ball to close the gap to 3-1.
Just when it looked like ECU was getting back into the game, the Shockers answered with a solo home run from Addison Barnard and a single RBI to increase the lead to 5-2.  The Shockers would add another run in the top of the fifth for its largest lead of the day and series at 6-2.Â
The Pirates would continue to fight with a run on a sacrifice fly from Joie Fittante in the bottom of the fifth inning. Emma Jackson and Sawyer would get into scoring position after a double and single respectively followed by Johnson's two RBI single to get within a run at 6-5.
Wichita State would only allow one hit in the bottom of the seventh as the Pirates' comeback attempt was unable to be completed in the loss.
Addy Bullis (6-2) picked up the loss in the circle with five earned runs surrendered in 2.2 innings pitched.
