Sowa Named American Defensive Player of the Week

IRVING, Texas - Abby Sowa was named the American Athletic Conference's Defensive Player of the Week for the season's opening slate of games, the league announced Monday. Goalkeeper Maeve English was named Honorable Mention in the weekly honors.
A senior captain, Sowa scored the game-winning goal in Sunday's 1-0 victory at NC State with a 38th minute rebound strike. The goal was the fourth of Sowa's career. The defender also helped the Pirates to their first shutout of the year, turning in an impressive showing on the team's potent back line.
For her part, English made three second-half saves, including one remarkable stop in the 64th minute in which she redirected a Wolfpack shot off the goalpost and eventually out of play. The graduate captain looked terrifically poised throughout the game, controlling the action in her penalty area on her way to the 22nd solo clean sheet of her illustrious career.
Sowa, English and the Pirates are back in action on Thursday for their home opener against UNC Greensboro. The 7 p.m. kick in Johnson Stadium is free for fans to attend and will be available for streaming on ESPN+.
