Wichita, Kan. – East Carolina resumes American Athletic Conference play this weekend when the Pirates visit Wichita State for a three-game series at Wilkins Stadium.
The series starts off on Friday evening with the first pitch slated for 7 p.m., followed by a 7 p.m. start time on Saturday and the series concluding on Sunday at 1 p.m. All three games will be streamed on ESPN+.
ECU (23-17, 9-6 AAC) saw its four-game winning streak snapped Wednesday night at North Carolina as the Pirates held a 4-0 lead in the fifth inning but ultimately fell 7-6 to the Tar Heels in nine innings. Prior to the UNC game, ECU swept Memphis and defeated Norfolk State. The Pirates' bats were hot all series, especially in the 17-1 win over Memphis on Saturday as Annie Kate Dalton and Gabby Fowler each hit grand slams to blow the game open with it being the first career home run for the latter. Kendall Frost was dominant in the circle throughout the week as well, allowing no earned runs while picking up two wins and a save. Dalton and Frost were tabbed to the American Athletic Conference's Honorable Mention on Monday.
The Pirates are led at the plate by Kanisha Anderson's .429 batting average (2nd in AAC) and the speedy sophomore leads the team with 16 multi-hit games this season. Emma Jackson, Morgan Johnson and Annie Kate Dalton combine for 32 of the Pirates' 49 home runs, which is first in the league (27th in NCAA). Taylor Apple (3.16 ERA, 94 Ks) and Kendall Frost (3.61 ERA, 78 Ks) are the two main arms in the circle for ECU. Dalton has reached base in 21 consecutive games while Anna Sawyer has recorded a hit in 11 straight contests. ECU is just one home run away from reaching 50 on the season which would be only the third time in the program's fast pitch era that they have eclipsed 50 home runs in a season. The Pirates' seven home runs in the 15-7 win at Charlotte on Mar. 28 tied for the second-most home runs in a single game in AAC Softball history.
Scouting the Shockers
Wichita State (19-18-1,7-7-1 AAC) enters the series coming off a 4-1 loss at UAB despite winning the first two games against the Blazers to take the series. Lauren Lucas leads the Shockers' offense with a .411 batting average, 11 doubles and 25 RBI while Taylor Sedlacek provides power at the plate with a team-best 10 home runs. Ryley Nihart is Wichita's top arm in the circle with 48 strikeouts and a 2.96 ERA.Â
Series History
Wichita State leads the all-time series with ECU 17-3 as the Shockers have won the last 10 meetings. The Pirates are 2-8 at Wilkins Stadium and are looking to win a game on the road at Wichita State for the first time since Mar. 27, 2021.
