Birmingham, Ala. – The East Carolina softball team is set to go on the road this weekend and resume American Athletic Conference play as the Pirates visit UAB for a three-game series.Â
The series opener is slated to get started at 8 p.m. ET on Friday, with Saturday's contest slated for a 2 p.m. ET first pitch and the series finale on Sunday scheduled to start a 1 p.m. ET. All three contests will be streamed on ESPN+.
ECU is seeking to snap a four-game losing streak as the Pirates could not hold on to an early 3-0 lead at home against their in-state rivals, NC State, on Tuesday evening. The Pirates gave up two home runs including a two-run blast in the top of the sixth inning that put the Wolfpack in front, 4-3. It was only the third loss in 20 games this season that ECU has led after five innings of play.
The Pirates are led at the plate by Kanisha Anderson's .401 batting average (3rd in AAC) and the sophomore leads the team with 19 multi-hit games and has recorded 65 hits this season. Emma Jackson, Morgan Johnson and Annie Kate Dalton combine for 38 of the Pirates' 60 home runs, which is first in the league. Taylor Apple (3.19 ERA, 110 Ks) and Kendall Frost (4.02 ERA, 93 Ks) are the two main arms in the circle for ECU.
Apple has eclipsed her season strikeout mark from last year (106) and is the first Pirate since Lydia Ritchie (2016-17) to record 100 or more strikeouts in back-to-back seasons. The Pirates have hit 60 home runs on the season which is the second most home runs hit in a season in program history. The program record is 64 which was set in 2017. Jackson is four homers away from passing Isonette Polonius who hit 18 in 1999 for the most home runs hit in a single season.Â
Scouting the Blazers
UAB enters the weekend on a two-game winning streak after defeating West Georgia on the road in a doubleheader, 7-5 and 17-3 respectively. Bella Wiggins leads the Blazers at the plate with a .382 batting average while Caroline McLendon is the top arm in the circle for UAB with a 3.79 ERA and 70 strikeouts.Â
Series History
ECU leads the all-time series 24-23 as the teams split the four meetings last year. UAB won two of the three in the season series while the Pirates took down the Blazers, 4-0 in the AAC Softball Tournament.
