Tampa, Fla. –  East Carolina is set to begin competition in the American Athletic Conference Tournament as the No. 6 seed on Wednesday evening when the Pirates will face the winner of No. 10 Memphis and No. 7 UAB.Â
The game will be streamed on ESPN+ with Ryan Urquhart (pxp) and Maria Trivelpiece or Allison Kime (analyst) on the call. ECU swept Memphis at home in the regular season but dropped its road series to UAB a couple of weeks ago.
ECU comes into the tournament with momentum after the Pirates swept North Texas at home last weekend. The sweep secured ECU's first winning AAC record and most AAC wins in a season since joining the league. The Pirates have also recorded back-to-back winning campaigns for the first time since 2010-2011, which were the last two seasons the program went to a regional.
The Pirates are led at the plate by Kanisha Anderson's .391 batting average and the sophomore leads the team with 20 multi-hit games and has recorded 70 hits this season. Emma Jackson, Morgan Johnson and Annie Kate Dalton combine for 45 of the Pirates' 72 home runs, which is tied for first in the league and is a new single-season program record, eclipsing the 2017 team's mark of 64 homers.  Jackson is currently tied with Isonette Polonius for the most home runs hit in a single season in ECU Softball history. Polonius hit 18 home runs in the 1999 season. Taylor Apple (3.07 ERA, 121 Ks) and Kendall Frost (3.89 ERA, 99 Ks) are the two main arms in the circle for ECU. Apple has eclipsed her season strikeout mark from last year (106) and is the first Pirate since Lydia Ritchie (2016-17) to record 100 or more strikeouts in back-to-back seasons.Â
Morgan Johnson was named All-AAC First Team, becoming only the second Pirate in the program's American Athletic Conference era to earn first team honors, joining Casey Alcorn who was named All-AAC First Team in 2015. She is only the third Pirate to earn first team honors in any conference since 2011 when Toni Paisley was selected All-Conference USA First Team. Jackson and Dalton were tabbed to the league's second team while Kendall Frost earned a spot on the All-Freshman Team. Frost's All-Freshman Team selection marks the fourth time in as many seasons under Shane Winkler that the Pirates have had a player on the first-year team.
Scouting the Blazers
UAB is led at the plate by Bella Wiggins' .366 batting average and 64 hits while Caroline McLendon leads the Blazers in the circle with a 3.88 ERA.
Scouting the Tigers
Memphis is led at the plate by Taylor Neely who is batting .326 at the plate with 42 hits while Zoe Adebayo leads the team with 10 home runs. Rylee Dugar is the Tigers' top pitcher with a 4.57 ERA and 61 strikeouts.Â
