Pirates Split First Day Of Pirate Clash

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina softball team split its first two games of the Pirate Clash on Friday, defeating James Madison 6-4 and falling to Towson in a defensive battle, 2-0, in eight innings at Max R. Joyner Family Stadium.
East Carolina 6, James Madison 4
Anna Sawyer went 3-for-3 at the plate while Sarah Stone and Jenna Krol both had two hits as East Carolina defeated James Madison, 6-4, in the first of two games on Friday for the Pirates.
Just like in their recent games, the Pirates struck first with two runs in the first inning and added another in the bottom of the second on Sawyer's RBI double.
James Madison made the score 3-1 in the top of the third but ECU answered with another run in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-1 lead going into the fifth.
The Dukes rallied to tie the game at 4-4 on a sac fly in the top of the sixth but Stone put the Pirates back in front in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI double and the senior would later score to make the score 6-4 in favor of ECU.
Julia Apostolakos (3-3) picked up the complete game win, tossing three strikeouts.
Towson 2, East Carolina 0 (8 inn.)
East Carolina found itself in a defensive battle in the nightcap game but the Pirates' offense could not find a spark late as Towson defeated East Carolina in eight innings, 2-0.
Trinity Nichols had ECU's lone hit as the Pirates went just 1-for-26 at the plate.
Neither team really threatened to score until the bottom of the seventh when the Pirates had runners on second and third with just one out. Towson would get the Pirates' next two batters out to extend the game, strand two ECU runners and score the game-deciding runs in the top of the eighth.
Sydney Rainford (1-1) tossed five strikeouts in the loss.

East Carolina faces Towson again tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. and St. Bonaventure at 3 p.m.
