February 22, 2026 | Softball
GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina softball team concluded play at the Pirate Clash on Sunday afternoon as the Pirates fell to James Madison, 7-5, in the tournament finale at Max R. Joyner Family Stadium.
Trinity Nichols led the Pirates at the plate with three hits including a three-run bomb in the bottom of the seventh. Both teams were even in the hits category with 10 on the day but a key error from the Pirates in the top of the seventh allowed the Dukes to blow the game open.
ECU struck first on Lillian Martineau's RBI single in the bottom of the second but James Madison tied things up in the top of the third with an RBI double.
Nichols put ECU in front 2-1 with an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth but once again the Dukes had an answer with a solo shot in the top of the sixth.
James Madison loaded the bases in the top of the seventh and took advantage of an errant throw by the Pirates to take a 7-2 lead going into the bottom of the inning.
Nichols' three-run blast gave the Pirates a glimmer of hope but with two outs, James Madison forced a fly out to end the game.
Julia Apostolakos (5-4) took the loss in three innings of work.
