May 01, 2026 | Softball
GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina softball team picked up two crucial wins on Friday evening, defeating UTSA 2-1 and 8-6 in a doubleheader at Max R. Joyner Family Stadium.
The Pirates (31-24, 15-11 American) secured a bye at next week's American Conference Softball Championship with the two victories and the 15 American Conference wins this year mark new program high.
Game One: East Carolina 2, UTSA 1
ECU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after Hailey Deter drew a walk with the bases loaded in the bottom of the first inning. Both teams' defenses were stout over the next couple of innings until UTSA's Taryn Madlock drove a ball to deep center field to pull UTSA within a run in the top of the fourth.
The Pirates had a chance to increase their lead in the bottom of the inning but stranded three runners. UTSA ended up getting the go-ahead run on base in the top of the seventh but Julia Apostolakos shut the door on UTSA's hopes for a late-inning rally, retiring back-to-back batters and forced UTSA's final batter into a ground out.
Apostolakos (16-11) earned the complete game win with seven strikeouts tossed.
Game Two: East Carolina 8, UTSA 6
Hailey Deter went 2-for-3 with five RBI at the plate to help East Carolina outlast UTSA in an 8-6 shootout in game two of Friday's doubleheader.
Mary-Kathryn Scott also added a clutch two-run triple to help hold off a Roadrunners' comeback in the bottom of the fifth. Gabby Fowler and Lillian Martineau both added two hits apiece for the Pirates.
Deter blasted home runs in the bottom of the second and third innings to put ECU ahead 4-0 but UTSA rallied to tie the game at 4-4 on Madlock's sac fly in the top of the fifth.
Fowler led off with a double in the bottom of the inning and Alexis Morgan eventually scored as a pinch hitter to put the Pirates back in front 5-4. Scott's two-run triple extended the Pirates' lead to 7-4 and Jenna Krol capped off the inning with an RBI single as ECU held a four-run cushion going to the sixth inning.
UTSA cut the lead to three on a solo home run in the top of the sixth and the Roadrunners made things interesting in the top of the seventh by loading the bases and walking in a run to cut the Pirate lead to just two. ECU escaped the inning on a fly out to center field and the runner coming home from third was called out for leaving early, ending the game.
Taylor Apple (6-4) earned the win while Apostolakos picked up her third save of the year.
