Jeffrey Artis-Gray joined the East Carolina track and field staff as an assistant coach in July of 2017.
Artis-Gray began his track and field career as an All-American Sprinter/Hurdler for Western Branch High School where he was coached by Olympian Claude Toukene. He went on to compete for Virginia Tech where he was coached by another Olympian Charles Foster. While at Virginia Tech, Artis-Gray was a 5 time All-American in the Sprints/Jumps as well as an All-ACC Hurdler holding 5 school records in the Long Jump (Indoor, Outdoor), 60 meter hurdles, 110 meter hurdles, and the 4x100 relay. Jeff earned his Bachelors of Science in Human Development and began his coaching career at his alma mater of Western Branch High School.

As a coach, Artis-Gray was honored as the 2015 Milestat.com Coach Of The Year in his first year coaching. He’s coached 4 high school national record shuttle hurdle relay teams. At the New Balance High School National meet Artis-Gray finished first and second with his shuttle hurdle A and B team 2 times in 2014 and 2017, the first coach to ever do so.

Artis-Gray coached ECU’s own Jada Terrell to 3 VHSL 6A State titles in the long jump, 55 meter hurdles, and 100 meter hurdles.

In 2018, Artis-Gray coached Brooke Stith to a runner-up finish at the AAC Indoor Championships in the Triple Jump. Mackenzie Whitaker also finished runner-up at the AAC Outdoor Championships in the Long Jump. At the 2020 AAC Indoor Championships, Stith won the triple jump title with a school-record mark of 12.82 meters while Whitaker captured the pentathlon crown by producing a meet and school-record total of 3,954 points.Â

Stith qualified for the 2018Â Outdoor NCAA Preliminary Round in the Triple Jump finishing 24th in a field of 48 competitors. Stith along with Mackenzie Whitaker and Jada Terrell qualified for the USATF Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships where Mackenzie Whitaker finished in 6th place with a lifetime personal best of 6.10m (20-1/4).
