Pirates Drop 3-2 Decision To James Madison
September 02, 2016 | Soccer
GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina women's soccer team suffered its second home loss of the season in a 3-2 setback against James Madison Friday afternoon at Johnson Stadium.
Sophomore striker Courtney Cash extended her points streak to three-straight matches with a career-high three points on a goal and one assist, while senior forward Lana Spitler scored her club and conference-leading fourth goal of the season. Junior midfielder Rachel Renfrow recorded her first-career point with one assist.
James Madison (1-4) picked up its first win of the season behind two goals by Christine Tack and a three-point performance by Ashley Herndon. The Dukes held a 14-10 advantage in total shots and a 10-6 edge in corner kicks.
THE GOALS
Second Minute: ECU wasted little time getting its offense going following the opening kickoff, working the left side of the field. Renfrow headed a ball from the near post and past a pair of oncoming defenders where it settled on the right foot of Cash, who touched an easy shot into the back of the net to put the Pirates ahead, 1-0, just 68 seconds into the match.
Fourth Minute: The Dukes countered immediately on its first offensive possession, when Herndon took an open shot from from 12 yards out that was saved by Caroline Jeffers, but the rebound went right to Tack who drilled a shot into the left side of the net before Jeffers could get to her feet, tying the match at one-all.
11th Minute: The fast pace stayed true through the first 10 minutes of action, as Cash touched a perfect through-pass up the left side to Spitler, who perfectly timed her route to get around her mark. Spitler then beat the goalkeeper with a well-placed shit to the right of the oncoming goalkeeper to put East Carolina back in front, 2-1.
47th Minute: James Madison tied the match once more just 91 seconds into the second half when the visitors caught ECU with a hustle play. Following a foul just outside the Pirates' goal box, the Dukes got a quick restart, as Herndon touched a pass ahead to Tack. Tack quickly reared back for a shot that was deflected by a defender from 15 yards out, sending the ball high with forward spin before coming down just out of the reach of Jeffers and landing in the back of the net.
57th Minute: James Madison began to impose its will in search of its first lead and got a great look for Herndon, who settled a pass from the right wing at approximately 30 yards out, before hitting a long, hard shot to the right and out of the reach of Jeffers to put the Dukes ahead, 3-2.
A CLOSE CALL
In the 64th minute, Spitler got a great look from the left side and close to 20 yards away from the James Madison net, when she struck the crossbar with a shot. The ball ricocheted downward and away from the goal before being cleared by the defense.
