GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina women's soccer team will look to get back on track when it travels to Norfolk, Va., for a non-conference match at Old Dominion on Sunday, Sept. 4. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:30 p.m.
ALL-TIME VERSUS OLD DOMINION
The Pirates and Monarchs will meet for the 18th time overall, while ECU trails, 9-8, in the all-time series. East Carolina earned a 1-0 home victory in Greenville last season and has won six of the last seven matchups between the programs.
SCOUTING THE MONARCHS
Old Dominion (2-3) enters Sunday's match coming off a 1-0 overtime loss at home on Thursday evening against the only common opponent it shares with ECU so far this season, William & Mary. The Monarchs were picked to finish fifth in Conference USA (C-USA) this season according to the league's preseason poll, while sophomore Iris Achterhof was selected to the C-USA's Preseason All-Conference Team. She was also the conference's freshman-of-the-year in 2015.
STRIKING FIRST
East Carolina has scored first in four of its five matches so far in 2016. Three of those initial tallied have come inside the first nine minutes of the match, including a second-minute goal against James Madison (9/2/16), a ninth-minute tally at Western Carolina (8/28/16) and a sixth-minute strike at No. 18 Virginia Tech (8/26/16).
SPITLER STRIKES TWICE
Lana Spitler scored two goals to complete her third-career multi-goal game in a 4-0 rout of Western Carolina on Aug. 28. She also scored twice in the same game at UNC Greensboro (9/6/15) and at home against Temple (9/28/14).
FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING
Sophomore Madeleine Watson and freshman Megan Conte scored their first-collegiate goals in the Pirates' 4-0 road win at Western Carolina on Aug. 28, while sophomore forward Courtney Cash notched two assists - the first and second helpers of her career. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Caroline Jeffers had to make just one save to preserve her first shutout.
200 PROGRAM WINS
East Carolina women's soccer earned the 200th win in program history in a 4-0 victory at Western Carolina on Aug. 28. Since the inception of the program in 1994, the Pirates have averaged greater than nine victories per season. The winningest coach in program history, Rob Donnenwirth has led the Pirates to 168 of their 200 victories.
SPITLER NAMED PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE
Senior striker Lana Spitler was one of 12 players selected to the American Athletic Conference's 2016 Preseason Women's Soccer All-Conference Team. Spitler is ECU's top returning scorer after posting 16 points en route to earning all-conference second team honors in 2015. Her six goals tied for the team lead, while her four assists and two game-winning goals were good for second most on the club.
PIRATES PICKED SEVENTH IN AMERICAN PRESEASON POLL
The American Athletic Conference released its preseason coaches' poll, as East Carolina was picked to finish seventh. By unanimous selection, UConn was voted as the preseason favorite after claiming last year's regular-season crown with a 19-4 overall record and a trip to the third round of the NCAA Tournament. USF followed in second, while UCF and Cincinnati tied for third. Memphis rounded out the top five.
CAPTAINS HOOK
East Carolina's captains in 2016 are senior defenders Autumn Berry and Caitlin Hite, senior striker Lana Spitler and junior midfielder Danielle Eule.
