GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina women's cross country team captured the ECU Pirate Invitational title Friday evening at Lake Kristi, downing visiting Norfolk State and Wake Tech at Overton's Lake Kristi in nearby Grimesland, N.C. The men finished in second.
Sophomore Grace Sullivan, the Pirates' top runner on the women's side in all three meets this season, won the women's race capturing individual medal honors. Her 5K time of 18:15.06 was nearly 40 seconds faster than the second-place finisher - teammate Victoria Cooke (18:54.30).
Felix Kiprotich from Norfolk State won the men's race in a 5K time of 15:18.60 while fellow Spartan Ronald Korir was second - crossing the line in 15:23.59. Senior Jorge Montes was the top runner for ECU, taking third place in a time of 15:29.76.
"I felt today was a solid performance for us on both the men's and women's sides," assistant coach Brie Berkowitz said. "Our goal going into the meet was to improve on working together and moving up as a pack. I felt we did a pretty good job of that. Our women achieved a perfect cross country score, sweeping the top five places. Our men continued to improve closing gaps. We are ready to get back to work and prepare for next week's meet at Lehigh University."
The women have won every ECU Pirate Invitational team championship since 2009.
