Gameday: Pirates Gear Up For Paul Short Run

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The ECU cross country program will participate in its second event of the season Saturday, traveling up to Bethlehem, Pa., for the Paul Short Run. The meet is hosted annually by Lehigh University at the Goodman Campus Cross Country Course.

The Paul Short Run is the largest intercollegiate cross country meet in the nation with approximately 6,000 athletes from nearly 450 colleges and high schools slated to compete this year. The day-long event includes 14 races (six college, six high school and two open races) beginning at 9:30 a.m. with the men's open race and concludes with the girls' high school JV race at 5:45 p.m.

The Pirates enjoyed a successful beginning to their campaign back on Sept. 1 when both the men and women took home the team and individual titles at the Carolina Challenge on the campus of the University of South Carolina.

The men, led by individual champion and senior Nick Ciaccia, edged Clemson by one point while far outdistancing Coastal Carolina, Winthrop and South Carolina State. Ciaccia and freshman Ethan Hageman both ran a 15:26, but Ciaccia was a tenth of a second faster.

On the women's side, senior Grace Sullivan won the women's race in a time of 17:08. ECU ended up with 22 points to run away with the event while Clemson was second and South Carolina third followed by Georgia Southern, Winthrop, Gardner-Webb, Coastal Carolina and South Carolina State. The Pirates had four of the top five scored finishers as freshmen Anna Bristle and Abby Yourkavitch, as well as junior Nuria Tillo-Prats, were third, fourth and fifth respectively.

For the third-straight week, the ECU women are ranked No. 15 in the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Southeast Region poll.
