GRIMESLAND, N.C. – In its final tune up before the American Athletic Conference Championships, the East Carolina cross country team hosted the Pirate Invitational Friday evening at Overton's Lake Kristi.

Both the men's and women's teams took third place in a field of 18 schools. Elon took the team title on the women's side while Duke was crowned the men's champion.

In the women's 6K, sophomore Abby Yourkavitch was the top ECU finisher, running a time of 21:30.39 for eighth place. Senior Mikayla Stoudt was next in 13th place with a time of 21:50.48. Sophomore Lindsay Yentz and senior Bethany Weaver took 20th and 22nd place in times of 22:04.04 and 22:13.74. The Phoenix had three of the top five runners in the event to score 35 points as compared to Richmond and East Carolina's 80-point total.

Sophomore Ethan Hageman claimed fifth place individually in the 8K, running a time of 24:29.43. Senior Josh Spare was 20th, crossing the line in 25:13.14, while freshman Chase Osborne and senior Dean Abushouk also finished in the top 25 with times of 25:16.78 (23rd) and 25:21.09 (25th). Coastal Carolina's Nadeel and Adriaan Wildschutt were the first and second place overall finishers. Duke ended up with 42 points to outpace Richmond (87 points) and the Pirates (92 points).

East Carolina now turns its attention to the American Athletic Conference Championships scheduled for Nov. 1 in Memphis, Tenn.
