GREENVILLE, N.C. – After the best weekend in the brief program history, the ECU women's lacrosse team faces a stiff test as the Pirates travel to Chapel Hill to take on No. 3 North Carolina on Sunday afternoon.
ECU (2-0) opened its season with a tight 13-12 win over Winthrop followed by a wire-to-wire 18-11 win over Gardner-Webb. The two wins tied last season's win total and is the best start for ECU. The 18 goals scored in the win over the Bulldogs also set a new standard for single-game offense.
After the perfect weekend, ECU earned a bevy of honors from the AAC. Christina White was named the AAC Defensive Player of the Week after the sophomore goalkeeper made 26 saves in the two wins. White was especially clutch against Winthrop when she made a pair of saves in the final five minutes with ECU leading by just two goals, as well as setting the ECU saves record with 16 stops against Gardner-Webb.
Also earning a weekly honor was Hannah Rzempoluch who was named AAC Freshman of the Week. Rzempoluch is currently third on the team with seven points on three goals and four assists and also leads the Pirates with nine draw controls. Brittany Borchers made the conference's weekly honor roll after leading ECU with 11 points on four goals and seven assists. Borchers' four assists against Gardner-Webb set a new ECU record. Preseason All-Conference selection Megan Pallozzi is second on the team with nine points on a team-best seven goals and a pair of helpers.
North Carolina (2-0) opened its season with an 18-7 win over James Madison. Katie Hoeg led the Tar Heels with nine points on three goals and six assists with Jamie Ortega adding six points on five goals and one helper. Taylor Moreno made 10 stops for North Carolina as well. The Tar Heels were picked to finish second in the ACC in the preseason coaches' poll and currently reside at No. 3 in the NCAA women's lacrosse poll with two first place votes. Sunday's game will be the first meeting between the two programs and will be the first time that Barnes Moore and assistant coach Emily Parros take on their alma mater.
The game is scheduled for 12 noon on Sunday. Fans can stream the game here or follow the live stats here.
