GREENVILLE, N.C. – After a loss at No. 3 North Carolina, the ECU women's lacrosse team will try to get back in the win column as the Pirates travel to take on George Washington and Delaware State.
Â
"We're looking forward to getting back out on the field and competing together as a team this weekend," said head coach Amanda Barnes Moore. "This will be our first real road trip as a team and that always brings a little extra excitement and energy. We don't feel like we played our best the last time out, and that's a hard way to go down against a really tough UNC team so we're trying to learn from that loss as quickly as possible and put in to practice adjustments we want to see in our individual play as well as with our units. We're looking forward to getting on the road and building up our team chemistry on and off the field."
Â
ECU (2-1) struggled in a loss at No. 3 North Carolina. The bright spot in the game was goalkeeper Christina White, who made 14 saves against the Tar Heels. The sophomore goalkeeper has 40 saves so far this season and a save percentage of .476. She was named American Defensive Player of the Week after leading ECU to a pair of wins during the opening weekend of the season.
Â
Also honored by the American was Hannah Rzempoluch, who was named AAC Freshman of the Week after the opening weekend. Rzempoluch added two goals and a draw control against the Tar Heels, bringing her to nine points and 10 draw controls on the season. Leading the team in scoring is Brittany Borchers, who has 12 points (four goals and eight assists) after picking up a helper on the second of Rzempoluch's goals against UNC.
Â
George Washington (0-1) will be hosting its home opener after falling at Longwood 14-12 to start the season. The Buff and Blue return 2018 A-10 All-Conference performer Jenna Oler in goal, with Oler making seven saves in the loss to Longwood. Abby Carlin and Tori Hampton produced much of the scoring for George Washington in that game, as Carlin pumped in four goals while Hampton had three of her own. Carlin added five draw controls to lead the Buff and Blue. Last season, George Washington beat ECU 18-7 in the Pirates' inaugural game.
Â
Delaware State (0-0) will be playing its season opener when the Hornets host ECU. Delaware State finished the 2018 season with an 0-14 record, including falling to ECU 16-2. Olivia Summerville is the top returner for the Hornets after racking up 15 points on 13 goals and a pair of assists last year.
Â
ECU will take on George Washington at 2 p.m., on Friday, Feb. 22 before traveling to Delaware State for a matchup at 12 noon on Sunday, Feb. 24.
