GREENVILLE, N.C. – Looking for a program-record four-game winning streak, the ECU lacrosse team welcomes Longwood to Johnson Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
ECU (3-1) has won three straight games to tie last year's three-game winning streak for the longest in the program's brief history. After a come-from-behind 12-11 win over Campbell, Megan Pallozzi and Ashley Vernon were both honored by the AAC. Pallozzi, who has scored nine goals in the past two games, was named the league's Attack Player of the Week. Vernon tied her career-high with nine saves against Campbell, including one on a free-position shot with under three minutes to go, and was named the league's Defensive Player of the Week. The freshman from Medford, N.J., is 29th in the country in goals against average, allowing just 9.97 goals. The only Pirate with more points than Pallozzi is Nicole LeGar, who currently leads the Pirates in points (14), assists (5), free position goals (3), draw controls (19) and caused turnovers (7). Megan Tryniski has already set a new career-high in points during her sophomore year, racking up 10 goals and two assists already. As a team, ECU has been deadly on free-position shots. The Pirates rank 11th in the NCAA in free-position percentage, scoring on 59.3% of their tries. ECU is also in the top-20 in the country in draw controls per game (16.0, 15th) and draw control percentage (.598, 18th). Along with LeGar, Camryn Pennypacker (12) and Frances Kimel (10) each have double-digit draw controls so far.
Longwood (1-2) is coming off a thrilling 20-19 loss to American. ECU will be tasked with stopping Kaitlin Luccarelli, who is among the nation's elite in free position goals and shots per game. She is second in the country in shots per game, taking 9.33 and seventh in free-position goals per game, averaging 1.67. Dana Joss leads the Lancers in points, scoring 11 goals to go with three assists, as well as in draw controls with 14. Along with Joss (14 points) and Luccarelli (13 points), Lexi Davis is the other Lancer with a double-digit point total already, as she has 11 points on three goals and a team-high eight assists, which also ranks 28th in the country. The Lancer defense has been either boom or bust in the early going. In its two losses, Longwood has allowed 20 points per game while the Lancers allowed just four goals in its 22-4 victory over Delaware State. Longwood does excel at taking care of the ball. The Lancers are first in the country in clear percentage, maintaining a clear rate of .967, and second in the nation in turnovers per game, giving the ball away just 10 times per game. Â Â
Wednesday's contest is scheduled to start at 4 p.m., in Johnson Stadium and admission is free for all fans. Those who cannot make it to Johnson Stadium can stream the game here or follow the live stats here.
