GREENVILLE, N.C. – Riding a program-record five-game winning streak, the ECU lacrosse team will have a stiff test with undefeated Army coming to town for a Saturday afternoon contest.
ECU (5-1) has won five straight games since dropping the season-opener at Furman. The Pirates have outscored opponents 79-44 in that span, including 32-12 in a pair of home wins. ECU is coming off a 16-12 win at VCU that saw the Pirates outscore the Rams 9-2 in the second half. Megan Tryniski was a major part of that effort, setting a new ECU record with eight points on four goals and four assists. Her eight points are also tied for the nation's 17th highest single-game total this year. She is tied for the team-lead in points with 22. Nicole LeGar also has 22 points, but that is not the only category in which she leads the Pirates. LeGar also has a team-high in free-position goals (four), ground balls (12), draw controls (29) and caused turnovers (10) and is coming off an appearance on the AAC Weekly Honor Roll. Megan Pallozzi is right behind Tryniski and LeGar with 18 points of her own, including a team-high 16 goals. MacKell Schultes leads the Pirates with nine assists and has 14 points total, while Ally Stanton and Ellie Bromley round out the Pirates with double-digit point totals, with 12 apiece.
Defensively, Ashley Vernon has started all six games in the cage for the Pirates. The rookie goalkeeper ranks 26th in the country with a 9.8 goals against average. She has a save percentage of .439 and has made 43 stops. Including LeGar, 14 different Pirates have caused multiple turnovers. Liz Blumthal is second on the team with nine caused turnovers while Cece Bartley has eight of her own. Blumthal is also second on the team in ground balls with 11 while Vernon and Frances Kimel each have nine.
Army (6-0) has outscored its six opponents 96-42 and has won all six games by at least three goals. Caroline Raymond leads the Cadets with 22 points on 15 goals and seven assists while Kathleen Sullivan has 21 points on 10 goals and 11 helpers. Samantha Stewart is tied with Raymond for the team lead in goals and is ranked third in the country in free position percentage, shooting 85.7% from the eight-meter arc. As a team, the Cadets are 15th in the country in scoring offense, averaging 16 goals and have 20 players with at least a point. However, their defensive numbers are even better. Army checks in at fifth in the country in scoring defense, allowing just 7.17 goals. Maddie Burns has started all six games in the crease and her save percentage of .493 is 26th in the country and she has made 33 stops. The Cadets are second in the NCAA at the draw circle, controlling 66.0% of draws. Stewart leads the way there with 31 draw controls while Juliana Dworschak has 26.
The game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m., on Saturday afternoon in Johnson Stadium and admission is free for all fans. Those who cannot make it to Johnson Stadium can stream the game here or follow the live stats here.
