Pirates Fall Short to Temple, 13-8
March 23, 2024 | Lacrosse
GREENVILLE, N.C. - Playing at home for the first time in nearly a month, the East Carolina lacrosse team got off to a sluggish start vs. Temple and was never able to fully climb out of the hole, losing 13-8. Frances Kimel starred for the Pirates with six points on three goals and three assists in the game.
Temple (7-3, 2-0 AAC) got off to a hot start in the game, running to a 5-1 lead through just a quarter of play. Four Owls scored in that opening frame and the visitors kept the momentum into the second quarter, leading by as many as seven goals at 8-1 before the Pirates (3-6, 0-2 AAC) got their second goal of the game. Both of the Pirates first two goals were scored woman up and bookended a 7-0 run by Temple.
The Pirates opened the second half with a run of their own to make it a ballgame, trailing just 10-5 after a Regina Di Chiara tally late in the third quarter. After Temple stopped the bleeding with a goal, the Pirates put on another 3-0 run capped by a Kimel goal which made it a three-goal game with 3:03 to play.
But, as it has often this season, the draw circle became a glaring problem as the Pirates were unable to get possession back to continue with their comeback effort. All told, Temple won the draw control battle 17-8 on the game and 4-2 in the critical fourth quarter.
Temple added two goals in the final two minutes for some breathing room and with it their streak against the Pirates continues.
Jaime Behar got the start in goal for the Pirates and made nine saves in the game.
It was fitting that Kimel was the star of the day for the Pirates, in spite of the loss, because with her second goal and third point in the game, the graduate student became the first ECU player ever to record 200 career points. Kimel is also just eight goals from the program career goals record - she also owns the ECU career assist record.
