Pirates Fall Short at Cincinnati Despite Kimel Career Day, 12-11
March 30, 2024 | Lacrosse
CINCINNATI, Ohio - The East Carolina lacrosse team came tantalizingly close to snapping their now seven-game skid but were unable to complete the comeback, falling short to Cincinnati by a 12-11 margin on Saturday afternoon. Frances Kimel was brilliant, posting an eight-point performance to nearly will the team to a win.
The Pirates (3-8, 0-3 AAC) were able to get within one with 49 seconds remaining in the ballgame but the ensuing draw control was knocked from Rachel Chessock's stick and Camryn Callaghan was able to score an empty-netter to seal the deal with 16 seconds left. Kimel did score another goal with six seconds to play but the Pirates ran out of time as the horn sounded before Sarah Goodison was able to reach the eight-meter fan.
Kimel was simply phenomenal in the game. She scored three goals and assisted on five more, good for eight points on the team's 11 goals. Five goals was a career high and matched the program record - as did eight points, which Kimel had already done one other time. Her three goals were of note as well, breaking the program's career goals record with 120 now on the illustrious career in Purple and Gold.
Still, it was another game in which the Pirates were forced to come from behind, trailing by as many as five goals in the contest before coming to life in the second half. A big reason the team was able to get back in the game was the play in cage of Brynn Knight who came off the bench to make 11 saves while allowing only five goals after entering in the second quarter.
Callaghan was brilliant for the Bearcats (9-4, 2-1 AAC), scoring six goals to lead an offense which looked electric at times. Cincinnati also dominated on the draw - an area which has become an Achilles' Heel of sorts for the Pirates - winning the battle there 18-8 to control possession.Ā
Erin Gulden scored a hat trick for the Pirates as well in the effort, but the Pirates were limited by a solid outing by Victoria Macres, who entered the day ranked sixth in the NCAA in save percentage.
In the big picture, Cincinnati moves to 4-3 in the all-time series and ECU's losing slide continues despite a lot of positives to take away and a few too many close calls.
