GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina lacrosse team hosts the No. 11 JMU Dukes on Saturday at noon for a high stakes regular season finale in Johnson Stadium. The game is free to attend for fans and will be available for streaming on ESPN+ with Zach Berly and Gabby Sartori on the call.
There will be a trophy on the line as the teams take the field with the Pirates hunting a share of the American Athletic Conference Regular Season Championship and James Madison going for the outright title.
Last Time Out
The Pirates fended off a William & Mary comeback for a third-consecutive one-goal win on Tuesday evening. Kayla Wilkes had another terrific outing with seven points on five goals and two assists, narrowly missing the program single-game points and goals records. Erin Gulden led the team with three assists while Emma Magazu had a team-high two caused turnovers as she broke the ECU single season record. Jaime Behar got the win in goal with 10 saves.
Scouting the Dukes
JMU enters the game at 11th nationally with an 11-4 record, including a 5-0 mark in American play. All four losses came against ranked opponents. Maddie Epke remains the player to watch for the Dukes with a gaudy season stat line of 69 points on 52 goals and 17 assists and 189 draw controls, besting her own program record first in the NCAA this season. As a result, the Dukes rank second nationally in draw control percentage at .660. Adanya Moyer has gotten the majority of the run in goal with an impressive .479 save percentage and 101 saves made. The Dukes will be looking for their 11th outright conference title in program history.Â
Series History
The Pirates and Dukes have met in each of the last two seasons, both JMU wins. It was a 19-3 game a season ago in which Isabella Peterson scored five goals to pace the dukes and Riley Matthiesen was the lone Pirate with multiple goals, scoring two.
What's at Stake?
There's a good deal on the line as the Pirates host James Madison on Saturday. With a win the team would have:
- Second .500-or-better regular season in program history.
- First ranked win in program history.
- Top seed in the American Athletic Conference Tournament.
- Share of the American Regular Season Championship.
Record Breaking Defender
With two caused turnovers against William & Mary, Magazu now has 26 on the season, besting Alexandra Giacolone's program record of 25 in a single season set in 2024. Magazu ranks second in the American Athletic Conference in caused turnovers this season.
Weekly Honors
Rachel Chessock was named American Athletic Conference Attack Player of the Week on Monday for her five-goal effort against Charlotte while Magazu earned an Honorable Mention nod after posting three ground balls and three caused turnovers.
