GREENVILLE, N.C. – Gabby Fowler hit the go-ahead, two-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning as East Carolina rallied to defeat Charlotte, 6-4, in the American Conference series opener between the two teams on Thursday at Max R. Joyner Family Stadium.
Fowler went 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and Kanisha Anderson went 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI as well for the Pirates (23-16, 7-6 American) who scored their most runs in a game since Mar. 22 at Memphis to snap a five-game skid.
Charlotte scored the game's first run on a wild pitch in the top of the first but the Pirates with small ball and some miscues in the bottom of the inning to go in front 2-1.
The Niners went back in front 3-2 in the top of the second on Sydney Lewis' two-run bomb and extended their lead to 4-2 on Jenna Lord's RBI single in the top of the fourth.
ECU started its rally in the bottom of the inning as Macey Ciamillo got on base with a single and advanced to second on a sac bunt from Mary-Kathryn Scott, setting up Anderson's RBI double to make it just a one-run game.
Hannah Evans drew a walk in the bottom of the sixth to put the game-tying run on base and Evans would advance to second with more small ball, this time via a sac bunt from Alexis Morgan. Anderson hit a ball just over the Charlotte infielders to score Evans and Trinity Nichols drew a walk to put two runners on base, setting up Fowler for the go-ahead double.
