GREENVILLE, N.C. - Senior striker Lana Spitler and junior midfielder Annah Lindberg scored one goal apiece as the East Carolina women's soccer team defeated Temple, 2-1, on Senior Night on American Athletic Conference action Thursday evening at Johnson Stadium.

The Pirates outshot the Owls, 26-12, overall and 17-5 in attempts on goal, while owning a 10-8 edge in corner kicks. Spitler registered a game-high 11 shots, including 10 on goal, while Lindberg compiled six shots. Temple (3-15, 0-8 AAC) goalkeeper Jordan Nash made 15 saves in all.

THE GOALS
18th Minute: Senior Kelsey Reeves touched a perfect give-and-go around Temple left back to freshman Megan Conte who raced to the end line before serving a perfect cross to the far side of the goal box where Lindberg found a seam in the defense and headed the cross into the back of the net to put ECU ahead, 1-0.

36th Minute: Freshman Marianna Shurina's shot following a two-on-one opportunity was deflected off Nash but Spitler collected the rebound and finished a shot with her left foot into the right side of the net to push the Pirates' advantage to 2-0.

56th Minute: Temple earned a corner kick that was sent in by Kayla Cunningham before a loose ball came out to Juliet Esposito, who volleyed the rebound directly into the back of the net to cut the Owls' deficit in half, 2-1.

"It was important. Our girls talked about sending our seniors off the way they deserved to be sent off. It's been a rough year for us, even if we've been a little unlucky at times. You saw how many shots we had tonight and we wondered if they were going to go to waste, but they played great. I thought all of our seniors played really well and Lana was everywhere. I'm proud of the win and they deserved it."

ECU POST-MATCH NOTES
-Spitler's goal was the 22nd of her career, moving her into a tie with former teammate Kendall Frey (2012-15) for the fifth most in program history.
-Shurina's assist was the first of her collegiate career and marked her third-straight match in which she's scored a point.
-Making her first start, Conte also tallied her first collegiate assist.

UP NEXT
East Carolina (5-11-1, 1-6-1 AAC) will host 19th-ranked UConn in its final match of the season. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 noon at Johnson Stadium.
