GREENVILLE, N.C. - After closing out a three-game road swing on a high note on Sunday, the East Carolina women's soccer team will return home Friday, Sept. 2 to host James Madison. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m., at Johnson Stadium.
The match was originally slated for a 7 p.m., start, but was moved up six hours due to the threat of severe weather. Admission into the match will be free of cost for all fans and spectators.
ALL-TIME VERSUS JAMES MADISON
The Pirates and Dukes will meet for the eighth time overall and just the third time in the last 16 years, as ECU trails in the all-time series, 1-5-1. James Madison earned a 1-0 win in Harrisonburg last season. The Dukes' last trip to Greenville came on Oct. 20, 2000 where East Carolina cruised to a 4-1 victory.
SCOUTING THE DUKES
James Madison (0-4) enters Friday's match in search of its first victory in 2016 after playing several challenging opponents in its first two weeks of the season, including Arkansas, Northwestern, Richmond and nationally-ranked Virginia Tech. The Dukes were highly regarded prior to the season after being picked second in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) behind William & Mary. Senior forward Ashley Herndon was selected as the CAA Preseason Player-of-the-Year, while midfielder Allie Bunner and defender Jennie Sroba also earned preseason all-conference recognition.
SPITLER STRIKES TWICE
Lana Spitler scored two goals to complete her third-career multi-goal game in a 4-0 rout of Western Carolina on Aug. 28. She also scored twice in the same game at UNC Greensboro (9/6/15) and at home against Temple (9/28/14).
FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING
Sophomore Madeleine Watson and freshman Megan Conte scored their first-collegiate goals in the Pirates' 4-0 road win at Western Carolina on Aug. 28, while sophomore forward Courtney Cash notched two assists - the first and second helpers of her career. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Caroline Jeffers had to make just one save to preserve her first shutout.
FANTASTIC FOUR
East Carolina scored four goals at Western Carolina on Aug. 28, marking the first time accomplishing the feat since Sept. 1, 2014 at Francis Marion with six. Before that, the Pirates scored four at Old Dominion on Aug. 21, 2011.
200 PROGRAM WINS
East Carolina women's soccer earned the 200th win in program history in a 4-0 victory at Western Carolina on Aug. 28. Since the inception of the program in 1994, the Pirates have averaged greater than nine victories per season. The winningest coach in program history, Rob Donnenwirth has led the Pirates to 168 of their 200 victories.
SPITLER NAMED PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE
Senior striker Lana Spitler was one of 12 players selected to the American Athletic Conference's 2016 Preseason Women's Soccer All-Conference Team. Spitler is ECU's top returning scorer after posting 16 points en route to earning all-conference second team honors in 2015. Her six goals tied for the team lead, while her four assists and two game-winning goals were good for second most on the club.
PIRATES PICKED SEVENTH IN AMERICAN PRESEASON POLL
The American Athletic Conference released its preseason coaches' poll, as East Carolina was picked to finish seventh. By unanimous selection, UConn was voted as the preseason favorite after claiming last year's regular-season crown with a 19-4 overall record and a trip to the third round of the NCAA Tournament. USF followed in second, while UCF and Cincinnati tied for third. Memphis rounded out the top five.
CAPTAINS HOOK
East Carolina's captains in 2016 are senior defenders Autumn Berry and Caitlin Hite, senior striker Lana Spitler and junior midfielder Danielle Eule.
