BETHLEHEM, Pa. – In a field that featured hundreds of runners, the East Carolina cross country program turned in a huge number of personal-best times as participants in the Paul Short Run Saturday on the campus of Lehigh University.
Â
The women finished 22nd out of 41 teams while the men took 34th in a 45-squad race.
Â
"It was a really exciting day for us," head coach Josey Weaver said. "15 out of our 17 runners had personal bests. This was a good test and measuring point for us one month away from our conference championships. We had a lot of individuals to step up and handle the stress of a big race. It's now on to championship season for us as we get ready to defend our own back yard at Lake Kristi for our home meet in two weeks. We still have a few things to touch up on, but right now we are on path to give ourselves a shot to be pretty good come November. Very proud of the effort and fight we showed today."
Â
Junior Josh Spare was top performer for the Pirates on the men's side, running the fifth-fastest 8K time in school history at 24:16 to finish in 58th place. Senior Dean Abushouk was the next ECU runner across the finish line, recording a time of 24:51 – good for 144th place.
Â
In the women's 6K, senior Nuria Tillo-Prats led the Pirates for the second-straight meet, tallying the sixth-best time in program history at 21:08 and finishing in 86th place. Classmate Mikayla Stoudt stayed 10th on the school's 6K top-10 list with a time of 21:22 that netted her 114th. Sophomore Abby Yourkavitch was just a second behind, ending up in 118th place.
Â
East Carolina will compete at home in two weeks, hosting the Pirate Invitational Oct. 18 at Overton's Lake Kristi.
