GREENVILLE, N.C. – Returning home for the first time since the season opener, the ECU lacrosse team will try to get back to winning ways as it hosts Campbell on Wednesday afternoon in Johnson Stadium.
ECU (1-2) will try to win its second home game of the season after beating Furman 16-14 in the opener. The Pirates have struggled on the road, falling at Virginia and Davidson. Megan Tryniski had two goals and an assist against Davidson and now leads ECU with 11 points on four goals and a team-high seven assists. Right behind her in the scoring column is Megan Pallozzi who has 10 points through eight goals and two assists. Nicole LeGar has not gotten on the scoresheet since racking up six points against Furman, but does lead the team with 15 draw controls.
Payton Barr has also been successful at the draw circle, grabbing 10 draw controls and added two goals against Davidson. Defensively, four different Pirates have caused at least three turnovers, including Pallozzi, Sam Caputo and rookies Courtney Frank and Alexandra Giacalone. In the cage, Ashley Vernon has made 23 saves and has a save percentage of .359.
Campbell (1-1) has split its opening two games, falling to Elon 13-9 and then beating Stetson 15-5. Wednesday's matchup will be the first road game of the season for the Camels after playing their first two games in Buies Creek. Sam Bischoff and Megan Matthews lead the team with six points each. Preseason All-Big South choice Julianna Sanchez is third on the squad with five points and also leads the Camels with 21 draw controls. Defensively, fellow preseason all-conference selection Annie Ryan leads the squad with three caused turnovers while Alex Salim has made 12 saves in the cage.
Campbell is one of three teams that ECU has battled in each of the first three years of the Pirates program. The past two years have produced instant classics, with Campbell winning 11-10 in triple overtime in 2019 before ECU got revenge with a come-from-behind 12-11 victory. Pallozzi, Tryniski and Vernon all had big days against Campbell in that 12-11 win, with Pallozzi and Tryniski each recording four points while Vernon nine saves. With a Pirate win, Campbell would become the third team ECU has beaten twice, joining Delaware State and Gardner-Webb.
Wednesday's game will get started at 3 p.m., inside Johnson Stadium. The contest will be broadcast on ECUPirates.com.
