GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina soccer team looks to bounce back on Sunday at 2 p.m. as they hit the road to take on No. 16 Memphis in Tennessee. The game will be available for streaming on ESPN+.
Last Time Out
The Pirates suffered a setback with a 3-0 defeat at the hands of South Florida. Elyse Thornton scored in the first half and Anna Sutter and Sophia Cabral scored a pair in short order in the second half for the final margin. The Pirates posted 13 shots, including seven on frame, and managed 10 corner kicks but were unable to capitalize.
Scouting Memphis
The Tigers may have suffered a couple of speed bumps with a loss to Tennessee and a draw vs. UAB, but the defending champions are still a plenty potent side. At 9-1-1 and coming off of a 4-0 defeat of Temple, Memphis is led offensively by freshman sensation Ai Kitagawa with five goals and a pair of assists leading a group of seven Tigers who have scored multiple goals on the season. Defensively, the team has allowed just six goals on the season with Kaylie Bierman playing the majority of the minutes in goal with a .783 save percentage and six shutouts.
Series History
Memphis has controlled the all-time series with a 19-3-3 record, including the last three in a row dating back to 2021. That win in 2021 in Greenville was the first ranked win for the Pirates in 22 years and was keyed by goals by Annabelle Abbott and Haley McWhirter. Maeve English made seven saves in the goal to hold serve for the victory.
Weekly Honors
Maeve English was named Goalkeeper of the Week and Lucy Fazackerley was named Defensive Player of the Week on Monday. English made four saves in the shutout win at Tulsa while Fazackerley scored the game-winning goal, her first of the season.
Iron Woman
Abby Sowa has played in every game and not come off for a second since Oct. 17, 2021. She has played 4,890 consecutive minutes and has been on the pitch for all 1,170 minutes this season. That's two full seasons and 54 full games.
Iron Women II
Maeve English and Annabelle Abbott both rank in the top 10 in program history in career starts with 80 and 78 apiece. English remains on pace to finish atop the record book while Abbott has a fighting crack, if the Pirates make the conference tournament, to break the old record as well with six games remaining in the regular season. Madison Keller holds the current mark with 82 starts from 2005-08.
