Pirates Snap No. 16 Memphis' Home Win Streak with 1-1 Draw
October 13, 2024 | Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The nation's longest home winning streak is over. No. 16 Memphis' 17-game run came to an end on Sunday afternoon as the East Carolina soccer team earned a massive point in league play with a 1-1 draw on the road. Caitlen-Star Dolan Boodram scored a worldie in the 75th minute to erase an early Memphis tally.
Memphis (9-1-2, 4-0-2 AAC) scored first in the 22nd minute on a very physical corner kick finished by Anne-Valerie Seto off of the delivery by Ai Kitagawa. The Pirates did force a pair of Kaylie Bierman saves in the first half but were unable to put a leveling goal on the board.
The Pirates (6-3-5, 3-2-2 AAC) needed a bit of a miracle as the minutes ticked down, staring down a third-straight 1-0 defeat to the Tigers, and they got it from the left foot of Dolan Boodram. The English freshman phenom took a pass from Sydney Schnell in the 75th minute and launched an ambitious looking shot from near thirty yards out. Ambitious it was but well-struck it was even more so, sailing over Bierman and into the back right of the goal. It was the Pirates first goal against Memphis since 2021 and Dolan Boodram's second of the season.
Memphis took a big swing at taking the lead back, but Maeve English and the ECU defense were more than up to the challenge, squelching any real chances, and allowing the Pirates to push forward for a few countering looks of their own. Despite not being credited with a save, English got her gloves on plentiful Memphis crosses and held firm to erase the danger.
As the clock struck zero, it was the Pirates first result against Memphis since a 2-1 victory on Oct. 24, 2021 against another nationally ranked Tiger side, and a massive point as the American Athletic Conference race heats up.
