Pirates Burned by Phoenix, 13-10
February 28, 2024 | Lacrosse
GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina lacrosse team lost to Elon, 13-10, on Wednesday night in Johnson Stadium.
The crux of the game, as it so often is, was the draw circle. Elon (4-2) finished with a 22-5 margin on draw controls as they dominated possession to hold onto the lead they gained early in the second half. Elon got 18 of their 22 draw controls from MJ Santa Barbara (10) and Mikaela Buoscio (8)
Doing their part to make it a game, the Pirates forced 14 turnovers in the game with nine registering as being caused TOs.
Ellie Bromley was a big piece of that, recording all four of her caused turnovers in the first half, trying the second-highest total in a game in program history. Bromley was a bright spot for the Pirates with three goals, one assist, four ground balls, four caused turnovers and four draw controls.
After being tied at halftime, Elon was able to take charge in the third quarter where they went up by as many as four goals. They were led in the game by Sammy Fisher with five goals and a pair of assists. Cierra Hopson and Anna Hackett did much of the rest of the work with four and three goals each.
The Pirates did manage to cut the margin to just one, 11-10 with nine minutes remaining thanks to Frances Kimel's third and fourth scores of the game, but a bevy of cards and two more goals for the visitors put the icing on the cake.
