JMU Deals Pirates First Loss of 2024, 2-0
September 15, 2024 | Soccer
GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina soccer team suffered its first loss of the season, 2-0, against JMU in Johnson Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Ginny Lackey scored both goals, both in the second half.
Â
The Pirates (4-1-3) had plenty of chances in the game with 11 corner kicks and a 10-8 margin in shots but were unable to tally a goal. The team looked to have broken the ice in the first half when Mackenzie Smith's corner found the back of the net, however the Pirates were called for a foul on JMU keeper Sofia DeCerb, waiving off the goal.
Â
It was a contest between two quality teams – one which was going to require a clinical finish to find a score. The Dukes (2-3-2) were able to do that in the 65th minute when Lackey collected the ball in her offensive half, dribbled towards the top of the 18, and fired a rocket of a left-footed shot into the right side of the goal. The strongly taken shot gave ECU keeper Maeve English almost no chance.
Â
Lackey gave the Dukes an insurance goal in the 79th minute as she capitalized on an ECU giveaway in the attacking third and calmly placed the ball into the right of the net once again.
