GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina lacrosse team returns home to welcome San Diego State to Bill Clark Homes Field at Johnson Stadium at 12 p.m. on Saturday. The game is free for fans to attend and will be available for streaming on ecupirates.com for those unable to make it out.
Last Time Out
The Pirates dropped an 18-10 decision to No. 23/24 Duke on Wednesday evening. The team was led by a Kayla Wilkes hattrick while Riley Matthiesen and Maya Koebke also notched three points apiece. Duke was led by hattricks from Avery Doran, Bella Goodwin and Quinn Whitaker. Doran also tallied a game-high three assists.
Scouting San Diego State
The Aztecs enter the game with a 1-2 record after dropping a 12-10 decision to Oregon on Feb. 16. The team's lone win came in a 15-5 effort over Fairleigh Dickinson. The team is led offensively by Mia Machtel's 12 points on eight goals and four assists. Keira Doyle-Odenbach also has 10+ points thanks to her seven goals and three assists to go with a team-high 10 draw controls. Defensively, seven players have three-or-more caused turnovers, led by Maya Tillman with five. In goal, Caitlin Boughton has gotten most of the minutes, making 20 saves to 28 goals allowed.
Series History
The Pirates and Aztecs met for the first time last year and it was a thriller with a 17-16 final margin for San Diego State. A back-and-forth affair in which neither team led by more than three goals, ECU tied it up on a Kayla Wilkes goal with 2:14 remaining only for Frankie Garcia to tally the game-winning goal with 45 seconds to play. San Diego State got the ensuing draw control and ran the clock out. Overall, four ECU players tallied hat tricks with Emily Stratton leading the way with six points. Kayla Wilkes had six draw controls to go with her three scores while Rachel Chessock and Riley Matthiesen also put three goals on the board. Jaime Behar went the full 60 in cage, making 13 saves in the loss. Caitlin Boughton made seven saves for the win for the Aztecs.
In The Community  Â
The program has made it a focus to strive not only for success on the field and in the classroom, but as representatives in the community. As a team, the Pirates logged 595.5 hours of community service in the fall.
Aspire
Assistant coach Kaelin Hogan graduated from the IWLCA's Aspire Program this spring. According to the organization, "The IWLCA Aspire program was designed to enhance coaches' professional skills, capabilities, and self-awareness through the dynamic blended learning approach."
At the Helm
The Pirates are entering year three under the leadership of head coach Brittany Dipper. Dipper has compiled an 13-24 record with a marked jump from her first to second seasons building anticipation for a successful 2026 campaign.
