Pirates, Camels Battle to Scoreless Draw, 0-0
August 25, 2024 | Soccer
GREENVILLE, N.C. - Despite holding a 19-2 edge on shots, the East Carolina soccer team was unable to find the back of the net in a 0-0 draw with Campbell on Sunday night in Johnson Stadium. The Pirates fired 13 shots in the second half alone as they pushed for the goal which never came.
The draw may have been a disappointment for a Pirates side riding back-to-back wins, but at 2-0-1 the squad still has their best start since 2017. Add in the fact that Campbell was coming off of their first ever win over NC State and perhaps Sunday's result was no surprise. The two combatants each had their chances, each keeper had to make difficult saves, and each side rode the ebbs and flows of the game with confidence on the humid August night.
For Campbell's part, the Camels move to 1-1-2 on the season and remain without a win over ECU since 2012. The draw ends a streak of five wins for the Pirates over their rivals from Buies Creek. Perhaps most incredibly, Sunday's game was the first scoreless affair in series history over 20 meetings.
All told, the Pirates forced five saves by Campbell keeper Sierra Vance and through their attacking play earned six corner kicks to the Camels' five. The Pirates took a 5-1 margin in shots on goal in addition to their plus-17 advantage in total shots.
For fans finding their seats in Johnson Stadium on Sunday though, the story might not have been the game to come but the woman in goal. It was the first time in 1,760 days, 70 games, and nearly five years in which the East Carolina soccer team played a game without Maeve English starting in net. Kayce Taylor took the field donning her double-zero kit and looked the part, making a leaping save in the first half and showing poise beyond her true-freshman years as she went the full 90. One start down and one clean sheet to her name, not bad for the rookie from Troutman.
